About Lightwater Country Park

Lightwater Country Park consists of nearly 60 hectares of heathland, woods, meadows, wetland, bogs and ponds, with plenty of tracks that criss-cross the Park to enjoy the scenic views, flora and fauna.

Once part of the vast Bagshot heathland, the area – designated a site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area for birds – regularly attracts a wide range of flora and fauna.

Lowland heathland is internationally one of the rarest and most endangered habitats. Park Rangers manage and conserve the heathland through active management, by removing invasive trees and scrub. Self-seeding Pine trees are regularly removed, to stop them shading out low growing heather, home to reptiles and insects, and on which rare birds, such as the Dartford Warbler, feed.

The Park has a Heathland Visitor centre, open and staffed during the summer months, containing instructional displays of wildlife habitat and of the living conditions of early dwellers on Bagshot Heath.

The Park contains a children’s adventure playground, picnic area, and colour-coded walking trails across open areas of natural heath, and through pine and birch woodlands. One of the trails includes a steep climb to the summit of High Curley, rewarding walkers with stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The Park also contains a Trim Trail fitness circuit set among pine trees.
