Festive fun despite rain: Most stallholders braved strong winds and rain for Lightwater’s Christmas ‘Fayre in the Square’
As ever with Christmas; it was the children who seemed to enjoy the Fayre best. The two school choirs, Lightwater School and Hammond School, gave their all. Festive spirit was in evidence in a glorious array of children’s hats; hats as Xmas puds; hats as Santa Claus; and fairy wings. It’s also amazing what’s possible with tinsel and a bit of creativity. Our Father Christmas is a big man, and seeing small children tell him what they wanted as stocking fillers was a delight.
Windlesham Country Market were a new addition to the Fayre this year, with their stalls selling jams, cheeses, pies, cakes and a variety of Xmas gifts, definitely a group to invite back for next year. The burgers from the Lightwater Gardening Club’s barbecue, added necessary inner warmth against the cold, as did the mulled wine on the LBA’s stall, and the hot tea on the WI’s stand.
Without All Saints’ Church Choir and their ‘whizzy’ skills with sound system and electrics, and the Lightwater Scouts big marquee, then the ‘Fayre in the Square’ wouldn’t be as all Lightwaterans have come to expect. Oh, mustn’t forget to thank the admirable Mike Duffy, proprietor of Budgens, for his and his staff’s contribution, mostly hidden from public gaze, but absolutely vital for all the village fairs.
Mike Godwin, co-chairman of the LBA, when interviewed by the Camberley News said, “…we raised enough money to give us confidence to provide the hanging baskets next year”, and commenting on the fairs said, “The fairs create a wonderful village atmosphere.” Well said, Mike.
This was the first LBA fair to suffer from rain, let’s all hope it’s the last.
